Tema, Oct. 15, GNA – The family of a 14-year-old student who died barely two weeks after reporting to Abomosu STEM Senior High School in the Eastern Region, is demanding a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
Master Daniel Boateng Mintah’s family says unanswered questions about the events leading to his death, the accounts they received from the school and the condition in which they found his body, had deepened their concerns.
Daniel reported to the school on September 18, 2026, with aspirations of becoming a computer engineer but died on September 30, the family said.
Speaking to the media at their Community 25-Dawhenya residence, his mother, Madam Joyce Mintah, said the family received a call that day informing them that Daniel was unwell and needed treatment for suspected malaria.
She said they were asked to provide his National Health Insurance details and later send GH¢50 for an injection.
The family said they attempted several times to obtain updates on his condition but could not reach the people who had contacted them.
They said later, a caller who identified himself as the school’s headmaster reportedly asked them to school urgently go to the school.
The family noted that the parents set off but were redirected to Kwabeng Hospital, where they were informed that their son had died.
They said they had expected to receive further information about Daniel’s condition and the medical attention he received before his death.
Their concerns deepened when they visited his body at the mortuary, with his father, Mr David Mintah, and his elder sister, Ms Vivian Mintah, who is a nurse, recounting seeing blood around his face and injuries or dressings on parts of his body.
Ms Mintah said the family wanted a clear explanation of what had happened to Daniel before he died.
She also raised questions about medication, including carbamazepine and olanzapine, which she said the family found among her brother’s belongings handed over by the school.
She said Daniel had not previously been taken for psychiatric treatment, according to the family’s knowledge, and they wanted to establish why the medication was among his possessions.
She said the family was yet to determined how the medication got in his belongings or if it was linked to his death.
Daniel’s former teacher, Mr Ricky Kwabena Godigah, an Assistant Headmaster of Richenfel Academy at Dawhenya, Tema Community 25, has also called for a thorough investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.
The family is appealing to the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, and the Minister of Education, Mr Haruna Iddrisu, to intervene and ensure that the matter is investigated.
They are also requesting that Daniel’s body be transferred to the Police Hospital in Accra to facilitate further investigations into the cause of death.
The family described her son as a determined boy who was passionate about computers and wanted to make his family proud.
