Mr Joseph Nelson, the Western Regional Minister, presented the items on behalf of the MP to the beneficiaries during the commemoration of the 2026 International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, organised by Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Directorate of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), at Sekondi.
He said the items were intended to bring comfort and support to those affected as they worked towards recovery from the incident.

Mr Nelson called on residents and institutions within the region to make disaster prevention a shared responsibility, saying; “We must take practical steps to reduce these risks.”
He encouraged the people to keep drains free of refuse, dispose of waste responsibly, avoid building on waterways and wetlands, comply with building regulations, and practise fire and electrical safety.
He also asked residents in flood-prone communities to obey official warnings, avoid crossing flooded roads and waterways, and move to safer locations when advised.
Mr Nelson further urged Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to intensify enforcement of planning and building regulations, improve upon sanitation and drainage, and address unauthorised developments in high-risk areas.
“NADMO and other relevant institutions must sustain public education, strengthen early-warning systems, and equip communities with the knowledge to respond effectively to emergencies,” he added.
Nana Appiah Mensah, a representative of the victims, who received the items on behalf of the others, expressed gratitude to the MP for the kind gesture, and said the items would go a long way to cushion them from their losses during fire incident at the harbour.
