Accra, Oct. 17, GNA – Mr Haruna Iddrisu, Minister of Education, has welcomed the suspension of strikes by university administrators, paving the way for academic activities to resume on Monday, October 19, 2026.
The Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) and the Technical University Senior Administrators Association of Ghana (TUSAAG) suspended their industrial actions effective Friday, October 16.
Mr Iddrisu commended the leadership of the two associations for the decision, which he said would help restore industrial harmony and ensure continuity in tertiary education.
“What is important for government is your announcement of a suspension,” he said, and expressed the hope that the decision would restore normal life on university campuses and allow students to resume their academic activities.
The Minister said the Government recognised the concerns raised by the two associations and remained committed to addressing outstanding issues through continued engagement.
He said about 80 per cent of the grievances had been addressed, while discussions would continue on the remaining concerns.
On the 40 per cent allowance and market premium, Mr Iddrisu said the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission would handle matters within its mandate.
He said restoring the academic calendar was a priority and expressed optimism that the suspension would prevent further disruption to teaching and learning and help universities maintain predictable academic schedules.
The Minister acknowledged the right of organised labour to embark on industrial action over unresolved concerns but urged the parties to rely on dialogue to settle their differences.
He reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to working with GAUA and TUSAAG to resolve the outstanding issues and sustain industrial harmony in the tertiary education sector.
Mr Iddrisu also thanked the government team and the Ministry of Finance for their support in addressing concerns within the education sector.
