Accra, Oct. 2, GNA – Deutsche Welle (DW) Africa, in collaboration with Channel One Media, has unveiled a current affairs television programme dubbed “Under the Baobab”.

The programme is dedicated to discussing key issues affecting the African continent, including politics, social issues and other topical matters of relevance to Africans.

The show will be jointly aired weekly by DW and Channel One Media on television and as a vodcast.

The maiden edition was unveiled at the premises of Channel One Media during a ceremony attended by diplomats, media practitioners, DW Africa staff and students, who watched and participated in the first episode.

The first episode, which aired on Channel One Media and DW media platforms, featured Ambassador Harold Adlai Agyemang, Coordinating Director for Political and Economic Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

It focused on the topic: “Beyond the Welcome: Migration, Xenophobia and Belonging in Africa.”

Ambassador Agyemang shared insights into the Government of Ghana’s plans for Ghanaian returnees who voluntarily returned home amid ongoing xenophobic attacks in South Africa targeting nationals of other African countries.

The audience also participated by sharing their perspectives and insights through social media platforms and from the venue.

Ms Asumpa Lattus, Head of the English for Africa Department at DW, said the programme represented not only Ghana but the whole of Africa, and thanked Channel One Media for the partnership.

She said the platform would serve as an accountability mechanism, enabling young Africans to demand answers from leaders across the continent.

Mr Bernard Avle, the General Manager of Channel One Media, said the programme would provide African countries with an opportunity to share and compare experiences on various aspects of governance.

He said modern democracies could not survive without platforms that promoted rational public discourse, necessitating the creation of the programme.

Mr Avle highlighted the partnership between the two media organisations, saying both institutions were committed to promoting resilient and strong democracies.

The programme would give young people across Africa a voice, he said, and urged them not to feel intimidated when expressing their views.

“Under the Baobab” is a vodcast that tackles Africa’s most pressing issues through conversations, insights and solutions.
