CSIR-IIR to honour young environmental champions at plastic recovery awards

Accra, Oct. 13, GNA – The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research’s Institute of Industrial Research (CSIR-IIR), in collaboration with OmniBSIC Bank and Ocean Tribe, will hold the 2026 Schools Plastic Recovery Project Awards Day to reward deserving champions.

The event, scheduled for Friday October 23, marks the third edition of the initiative, following similar programmes held in 2021 and 2022, which engaged eight schools in Accra in promoting responsible plastic waste management and recovery.

The programme will be held at the Assembly Hall of the Odorgonno Senior High School (SHS) in Accra, with participating schools being Accra High, O’Reilly, Forces Senior High and Technical, Odorgonno and St. John’s Grammar SHS.

In a press release copied to the Ghana News Agency, Dr Boniface Yeboah Antwi, the Project Lead, said the Awards would be presented to Plastics Challenge winners, the school with the highest plastic waste recovery rate, and Student Environmental Champions.

Dr Antwi explained that the initiative was intended to move environmental education from awareness to practical action.

“We want to change the question from ‘Where do we dispose of plastics? To ‘How do we recover the value in this plastic?’ and the change in mindset is fundamental to building a circular economy,” he said.

Dr Antwi noted that plastic waste was not simply a disposal problem, but when properly recovered, it became a resource that could return to productive use.

The statement said the awards would celebrate student achievement, while reinforcing the importance of plastic recovery, environmental stewardship, and stronger links between schools and recycling industries.
