Sunyani, (Bono), Oct. 15, GNA-The Convention’s People Party (CPP) says the party is highly disappointed about the recent appointment made by President John Dramani Mahama to the Electoral Commission (EC).
The party’s concerns followed the appointment of Mrs Emelia Afi Agbenyo and Dr Joseph Kweku Asamoah, as Deputy Chairpersons of the EC.
According to Mr Ali Dayinday, the Bono Regional Chairman of the CPP it was unfortunate and disturbing that successive National Democratic Party (NDC) and New Patriotic Party (NPP) governments tried to undermine the independence of the nation’s electoral management body.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani, Mr Dayinday emphasized that the CPP was worried about those appointments, saying that it weakened the independence of the EC as a constitutional body.
“Ghana is a very interesting country, and if we continue joking with our electoral processes, the worst will happen one day, and we will all understand that we do everything in this country with partisan politics”, he warned.

Mr Dayinday regretted that: “Today both the NDC and the NPP are turning the EC into party affiliations and it’s a mistake the nation is making”.
He recollected that both the CPP, NDC and political actors in the country criticized and castigated the previous Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s administration for the appointment of Dr Peter Appiahene to the EC in 2023.
“Dr Appiahene, the then Head of the Department of Computer Science and Informatics at the University of Energy and Natural Resources, was a well-known member of the NPP”, he stated.
“So, we expected President Mahama to maintain that principle, but it’s unfortunate that the President has repeated the same mistake the NPP did”, Mr Dayinday indicated.
He insisted that: “It is bad and there is no need for the nation to appoint any known NDC or NPP person to the EC”, advising that: “Let’s allow the EC to remain as an independent body in the supreme interest of the nation”.
