COMPLIT FITNESS opens in Gbawe – New hub for health, strength and community

Accra, Oct. 05, GNA – Residents of Gbawe and its environs in the Greater Accra Region have a new reason to get moving.

Complit Fitness officially opened on Saturday, October 4, at the TotalEnergies Service Station Building, Gbawe, promising a modern, welcoming space for total body wellness. More than a gym, it is positioning itself as a lifestyle hub where fitness meets health education, motivation and community support.

The opening comes at a time when Ghana faces a rising burden of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs). This smart private business initiative meets government’s desire to make Ghanaians healthy, happy and productive.

The NCD burden: Why Gbawe needs this now
According to the Ghana Health Service and WHO, NCDs now account for about 45 per cent of all deaths in Ghana. The major drivers are hypertension, stroke, diabetes, obesity and heart disease — all linked to sedentary lifestyles, poor diet and physical inactivity.

Data shows:
– 1 in 3 adults in Greater Accra has elevated blood pressure, many undiagnosed.

– Ghana’s adult overweight/obesity prevalence is estimated at over 30 per cent, higher in urban areas.

– Physical inactivity contributes to over 20 per cent of NCD risk, according to WHO.

Health experts say just 150 minutes of moderate exercise weekly — 30 minutes, five days a week — can cut risk of heart disease by 35 per cent, diabetes by 40 per cent and depression by 30 per cent.

This is where Complit Fitness positions itself as preventive infrastructure.

Cardio Area – For a Stronger Heart
The dedicated cardio area has treadmills and aerobic equipment. Regular cardio lowers blood pressure, improves circulation, burns calories, reduces risk of heart disease, stroke and Type 2 diabetes, and boosts mood through endorphins.

“Whether you are walking for fitness or training for endurance, this is the perfect place to start your weight-loss and heart-health journey,” Mr Kwamina Ackun-Wood, the owner, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA).

“Today, I am grateful to see this transformed space at the TotalEnergies Gbawe Building. Gbawe, Mallam and McCarthy Hill residents should not face traffic for premium fitness facilities.”

“We asked why world-class facilities and elite coaching could not be available here. Complit Fitness is the answer: elite, community-focused fitness close to home,” he said.

Beyond Four Walls and Heavy Iron
“More than equipment, we offer a community built on consistent coaching and follow-through. When motivation fades, support matters. We call its absence ‘silent abandonment’ — and it ends here,” Mr Ackun-Wood added.

Certified trainers provide guidance, monthly reviews and safe training schedules that fit Accra’s demanding work and family life.

The hub opens from 0500 hours to 2200 hours, Mondays to Saturdays, and 1300 hours to 2200 hours on Sundays. Beginners and athletes are welcome into what is projected as a 900-member community.

Strength Training Zone – Build Muscle, Protect Bones
Equipped with dumbbells, kettlebells and modern resistance machines, the zone helps build lean muscle, increase metabolism and strengthen bones and joints.

Health professionals recommend strength training at least twice weekly to prevent age-related muscle loss, improve posture, support back health and enhance functional strength — critical for preventing falls and musculoskeletal disorders in adults over 40.

Group Fitness Class – Train Together, Stay Motivated
Group classes improve consistency, reduce stress and anxiety and build accountability. From high-energy burn sessions to guided routines, classes cater to beginners and advanced enthusiasts.

State-of-the-Art Environment
The facility offers a clean, spacious, well-ventilated environment, professional trainers and guidance on form, personalised routines and lifestyle tips to maximise results and prevent injury.

How Complit Fitness supports MahamaCare
Government’s MahamaCare initiative, launched in 2025 to tackle the rising NCD burden, shifts focus from curative to preventive and community-based care — promoting regular screening, healthy lifestyles and early management of hypertension and diabetes to reduce pressure on tertiary hospitals and the National Health Insurance Scheme.

Complit Fitness directly supports MahamaCare’s preventive health pillar in three ways:

1.  Prevention over prescription: Regular physical activity is first-line prevention for hypertension and diabetes — the two conditions driving MahamaCare costs.
2.  Community screening and education: The hub plans monthly BP checks, BMI assessments and health talks, linking members to early care — a core MahamaCare strategy.
3.  Reducing health system burden: Every member who controls weight and blood pressure through exercise reduces admissions, drug costs and productivity loss.

As Mr Ackun-Wood noted, “Investing in shared future fitness supports preventive health, mental clarity, productivity and longevity. This facility belongs to our partners, businesses and residents.”

Join the Movement
The public was not only invited to tour the facility and meet trainers at the opening, but urged to come with friends and leave with a fit family.

“Your health is your wealth to invest in,” Mr Ackun-Wood said.
