Agogoso (Ash), Oct. 27, GNA – Mr. Issahak Ibrahim, Atwima Mponua District Chief Executive (DCE) in the Ashanti region has urged community members to help protect existing public properties and facilities in their areas.

He said, the government could not provide new development projects as expected if it continued to renovate or replace existing deplorable ones with the limited available resources.

Mr Ibrahim, made the remarks at Pakyi and Agogoso, when he inaugurated and handed over six-unit classroom block each to the communities.

The DCE also handed 500 dual and mono desks as well as 50 Teachers’ tables and chairs for the basic schools in the two communities.

He said, the government was committed to providing the needed learning materials and facilities, but the maintenance culture, protection and ensuring the long lasting of such facilities by the community members was equally essential.

He explained that the Agogoso D/A basic school, which served as a Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) centre needed to be equipped, maintained and protected to serve its purpose effectively.

The District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) funded projects were completed within 10 months and contained other ancillary facilities to ensure that learners enjoyed a dignified, comfortable, healthy and conducive atmosphere for academic activities.

Ms. Ama Adwubi Asafu-Adjaye, the District Director of Education, commended the government for providing the edifice, fulfilling the education act 2008, (Act 778) which assigned executive responsibility to the District Assembly to provide and manage basic and second cycle education facilities.

She said the Agogoso basic school was the most populous school in the district with over 700 pupils.

She appealed to parents to desist from burden their wards with many household chores.

“A child who is exhausted from long hours of chores may not have the energy or concentration needed to study effectively”, she stated.

Mr. Samuel Takyi-Mensah, an opinion leader at Agogoso, who chaired the function agreed with the DCE’s call for the maintenance of state properties, particularly classrooms, by community members and other stakeholders.

He mentioned the writing of pupils’ nicknames, Lotto and telephone numbers of adults with pieces of chalk and charcoal on school walls and pillars, defecation, smoking and sleeping in classrooms, as direct wrongful acts that must be checked and stopped by local community leaders before any external intervention.
