Aflao (V/R), Oct. 2, GNA – The Akonta Foundation, led by Torgbui Tenuvi II, Youth and Development Chief of the Aflao Traditional Area, has launched a sports equipment project to provide 300 sets of jerseys and 300 footballs to 100 basic schools in the Ketu South Municipality.
The initiative, expected to be implemented in October 2026, is aimed at strengthening grassroots sports development, addressing equipment challenges in schools, and creating opportunities to identify and develop young talents.
Torgbui Tenuvi, announcing the initiative, said each of the 100 schools would receive three sets of jerseys and three footballs to support their Boys Under-13, Girls Under-15 and Boys Under-15 teams.
He said grassroots sports at the basic school level were essential for discovering talents, promoting physical well-being and instilling values such as discipline, teamwork and resilience in young people.
Torgbui Tenuvi said he had previously invested in handball, basketball, volleyball and athletics at both basic and senior high school levels, adding that football remained an important sport that required support from private organisations and non-governmental organisations.
He said private sector partnerships could provide equipment, sponsorship and structured youth programmes, while the Government and local assemblies complemented such efforts through additional funding, improved sports facilities and dedicated administrative structures.
Torgbui Tenuvi said he had witnessed the difficulties some schools faced in securing suitable jerseys for their teams, which could affect the morale of young athletes.
He said the initiative was intended to address some of those logistical challenges while efforts continued to improve infrastructure for grassroots sports.
The project, he said, was particularly timely as Ketu South prepared to host the 56th Inter-District Sports Festival in 2027, adding that the equipment would assist schools in their preparations for the event.
A centralised handing-over ceremony is expected to be held later in October, with sports prefects, school heads and officials of the Ketu South Municipal Education Directorate expected to attend.
The Akonta Foundation had earlier supported Ketu South’s participation in the 55th Inter-District Sports Festival with GH¢10,000.
Torgbui Tenuvi said the amount was delivered through Mr Ferguson Ahorlu to Mr Stanley Kwawuvi, Sports Coordinator for the Ketu South Municipality, following a request for support from the Municipal Education Directorate.
The contribution was intended to support the Municipality’s participation in the festival, held at the Akatsi Senior High Technical School from August 15 to 21, 2026.
Ketu South won the overall championship title in 2025 after securing four of the eight trophies at the competition.
Torgbui Tenuvi said the earlier contribution was to support the young athletes in their bid to defend the Municipality’s overall championship title.
He called for collective efforts to address challenges confronting communities while awaiting complementary support from the Government.
