Accra teachers return to the classroom as strike action is suspended

Accra, Oct 12, GNA – Teachers in some Basic Schools in Accra have returned to the classroom following the suspension of a two-week nationwide strike by teacher unions over outstanding allowances and promotion arrears, and a call by the leadership of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) for members to resume work on Monday, October 12, 2026.

At the Adenta Community School, teachers were seen supervising their students to clean up the compound.

Teaching had started at the Mantse Tackie Tawiah Cluster of Schools at Adabraka when Ghana News Agency (GNA) visited.

Meanwhile, Mr Wellington Akwetey Amanor, Headmaster of Liberty Avenue 1 and 4 Basic School, told GNA that the school would be organising early morning and late afternoon “extra classes” to cover the lost academic periods due to the strike action.

More soon.
