Sunyani, (Bono), Sept. 21, GNA-Dr Kelvin Gidisu, Urologist at the Sunyani-based Bosomtwi Urology Hospital had expressed concern about the growing cases of prostate, advising the public to screen for the condition frequently for early detection and management.
“Seeing a specialist time, drinking water frequently and avoiding keeping urine for long hours are vital in preventing prostrate”, he told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview in Sunyani.
Dr Gidisu spoke to the GNA on the sidelines of the fifth edition of the “Sompa Health Clinic”, a health outreach organised by the Sunyani-based Sompa FM in Sunyani, warning that: “Keeping urine in the body for long hours weakens the bladder”.
More than 800 people, including the aged, students, and children benefited from the free health screening outreach which enabled them to know their various health conditions.
They were screened for high blood pressure, diabetes, body mass index, as well as dental and eye services.
Specialists also attended critical cases like gynecological, eye, dental, and prostates as well as throat, ear and nose conditions.
Some of the beneficiaries who had serious conditions were referred to health facilities and others were also provided with free drugs to manage their condition.
Dr Gidisu indicated that knowing one’s health condition remained paramount to preventing and fighting chronic diseases.
Earlier, Mr Joseph Addae Akwaboa, the Bono Regional Minister commended the management of Sompa FM and urged them to sustain it, saying that the outreach would complement the government efforts in achieving the objective of the Primary Healthcare Programme (PHC).
He indicated that with the PHC programme citizens regardless of their social and economic status could just walk to any nearest public health facility for basic health services free of charge.
Mr Akwaboa called on the media to intensify public campaigns for the citizenry to understand and embrace the concept of the PHC for the nation to derive the optimum benefit.
Mr Yaw Aboagye Boadi, the General Manager of the Sunyani-based Sompa FM explained that the outreach organised annually and in September formed part of the station’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CRS) to give back to society.
“We seek to bring quality healthcare services to the doorstep of the people in the Sunyani Municipality and even beyond every year”, he added.
Mr Boadi noted that organizing the outreach for five years had been challenging and appealed for sponsorship and to sustain it for the benefit of the masses.
Some of the beneficiaries also commended the management of the FM station for the outreach and hoped that it would be sustained.
“I am extremely happy because my condition has been catered for”, Adam Mma Adiza, a beneficiary stated.
