Denu (V/R), Sept. 28, GNA – Academic activities at basic schools in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region have been disrupted following the commencement of a nationwide strike by three teacher unions.
A visit by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) to some schools in the Municipality on the first day of the strike showed largely empty school premises, with teachers informing learners about the industrial action and asking them to return home.
At the Denu R.C. Basic School, there were no learners on the premises when GNA visited.
At the Denu M.A. (Chicago) Basic School, only five learners were seen on the premises.
The learners said they had not been informed about the strike before reporting to school and only realised that teachers were absent after they arrived.
A teacher later informed them about the industrial action and asked them to return home.
When asked whether they wanted to leave, two of the learners said they preferred to remain on the school premises until the usual closing time.
At the Hedzranawo AME Zion School, some learners were seen on the compound, with a few teachers informing them about the strike and preparing to send them home.
Similar situations were observed at the other schools visited by GNA in the Municipality, with teaching and learning activities disrupted by the industrial action.
The strike was declared by the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG).
The unions declared an immediate nationwide industrial action over outstanding promotion allowances and arrears owed to teachers, as well as delays in negotiations with the government.
They had given the government until midday on September 24, 2026, to address their concerns.
The unions said the decision followed prolonged delays, unfulfilled commitments, and growing frustration over issues affecting teachers.
