Golokuati (V/R), Sept. 28 GNA-The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) have warned that they will reject any request by the government for more time to resolve outstanding issues that led to their nationwide strike.
The unions said they expected payment of the arrears owed them paid without further delay and asked that the prompt payment of the arrears be the focus of the scheduled meeting with Mr Haruna Iddrisu, the Minister of Education.
Teacher Unions are demanding payment of six months outstanding salary arrears, including deprived-area allowances and promotion arrears owed teachers who have been promoted.
Mr Prosper Agbeli, Kwahu South and Kwahu East District GNAT Secretary and Assembly Member of Alorkpa/Avadre, in an interview with the GNA prior to the meeting, said the Unions had no new demands except what had been presented.
“There are three major issues-two of them are about payment, and we do not have any fresh issues to raise. All we are expecting and asking the government to do is to make the payments,” he said.
According to him, the Deprived Area Allowance even though had been payment had done be done whiles promotion arrears to teachers who had been duly promoted was outstanding as well as corresponding salary adjustments.
Mr Agbeli said the unions expect government to honor its commitments and ensure the payments were made to avert further industrial action adding that “teachers across the country are anxiously awaiting the outcome of the meeting, with the minister of education minister.
