Istanbul, Sept 22. (dpa/GNA) – An armed attacker opened fire near a vocational school in the western Turkish city of Manisa, injuring at least 11 people, two of them seriously, Justice Minister Akın Gürlek said on X on Tuesday.
The suspected attacker was arrested, according to the provincial governor. Gürlek said police also detained the suspect’s father, mother and grandfather. The grandfather was said to have held a licence for the weapon.
Investigators were looking into how the weapon ended up in the attacker’s hands, and whether the parents had breached their duty of supervision, the justice minister added.
The incident occurred in the Turgutlu district, he said. Broadcaster Halk TV said the suspected attacker was a teenager.
Images showed ambulances and concerned parents rushing to the school. The Education Ministry said classes would be suspended for one day.
In April, a teenager opened fire at his school in south-eastern Turkey, killing nine pupils and a teacher. The shooter was also killed in the rampage.
Investigators said he used a weapon belonging to his father. The parents have been on trial since early September.
Security measures were tightened at the start of the school year in Turkey last week.
