Kumasi Sept. 16 GNA – The Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC), has taken its public sensitisation and education campaign to some selected mosques in Kumasi.
The Commission, through its PURC Mosque Sensitization Programme, has so far, educated and sensitized over 1000 Muslims on meter acquisition protocols, illegal connections, payment of utility bills, dispute resolutions, among others.
Mr. Edward Boduah, the Ashanti Regional Branch Manager of the PURC indicated that, the Commission had dedicated June and September 2026, to take its regulatory oversight and utility education directly to local communities through a dedicated outreach campaign titled *”PURC at the Mosque.”
The initiative, he said, was to bridge the gap between utility service providers—the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and Ghana Water Limited (GWL)—and the consuming public.
He said the sensitisation took the public through Grid Protection and Infrastructure Safety, middleman fraud, broadened consumer understanding of PURC’s core mandate, transforming its public image from solely a tariff-setting body into an accessible advocate for consumer protection and service quality.
They also took consumers through redress seeking mechanism, and thus, building public confidence in official complaint channels, leading to a noticeable surge in formal grievances lodged with the Commission for resolution.
Mr Boduah said the “PURC at the Mosque” education drive demonstrated the effectiveness of faith-based community engagement as a tool for regulatory education.
By meeting consumers where they gather, the Commission not only deepened public understanding of safe and lawful utility use but also strengthened trust in its mandate as a protector of consumer interest.
Mr Boduah said the Ashanti Regional Office would sustain this model, expand it to more congregations, and continue to collaborate with religious leaders, ECG, and GWL to ensure utility services in the region were safe, reliable, and fairly delivered.
