Ho (V/R), Sept. 18, GNA – Communicator Felicity Ahafianyo has urged parents to provide their wards entering Senior High Schools (SHSs) and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions with the necessities of their education.
She said although the government continued to provide tuition-free education and improve school infrastructure, parents had an important responsibility to ensure that their children had the essential learning materials and personal effects required for a comfortable stay in school.
Madam Ahafianyo, who is the National Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the National Council of Parent-Teacher Associations (NCPTA)-Ghana, said: “While the government is providing tuition and school infrastructure, parents should also make a conscious effort to provide their wards with the basic school needs.”
Madam Ahafianyo made the appeal in an exclusive interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) after the NCPTA-Ghana Zonal Meeting held at Mawuli School in Ho on Thursday.
She further advised students entering SHSs and TVET institutions to understand the transition they were making and conduct themselves responsibly while in school.
The PRO of the NCPTA-Ghana, who is also the Head of the Central Analysis and Forecasting Office of the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet), urged parents to properly prepare their wards for the new academic environment and counsel them to respect school authorities, teachers and their colleagues.
Also, “students should know where they are coming from and behave well while in school.”
Madam Ahafianyo appealed also to families, churches, non-government organisations (NGOs) and other benevolent organisations to identify vulnerable children and support them to remain in school.
She said supporting vulnerable children to access and sustain their education was not only beneficial to the beneficiaries but also contributed to the development of society.
“When it is good for those children, it is good for society and Mother Ghana,” she said.
The NCPTA-Ghana Zonal Meeting, which brought together national executives of the Council and Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) chairpersons, vice-chairpersons, secretaries and other representatives from Senior High Schools in the Volta Region, was aimed at sharing ideas, strengthening collaboration and promoting social interaction among PTA leaders.
The meeting also provided an opportunity for participants to discuss issues affecting parents, students and schools and explore ways of strengthening parent-school collaboration to support quality education.
Madam Ahafianyo encouraged PTA leaders to maintain close engagement with school authorities and parents to address challenges confronting students and create an enabling environment for effective teaching and learning.
