Copenhagen, Aug 31. (dpa/GNA) – The Norwegian royal family, paid tribute to the late King Harald V, at a memorial service on Sunday, as people across the country gathered for ceremonies honouring the popular monarch.
The new King, Haakon VIII, attended the memorial service at the church in Asker with his children, Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra, and Prince Sverre Magnus, as well as his mother Queen Sonja.
Haakon’s wife, the new Queen Mette-Marit, did not attend for health reasons. She received a new lung in the summer and still needs to rest. However, Mette-Marit will attend some other events following Harald’s death, the royal court announced.
Across Norway, churches and cathedrals also held services in Harald’s memory. Many Norwegians have described him as the “grandfather” of the nation.
Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, attended a memorial service at Oslo Cathedral. Norway’s royal palace announced on Sunday evening that Harald’s funeral has been set for September 9. He died early on Friday morning.
Books of condolence have been laid out at many venues, in which people can sign to pay their respects.
Since the news of the king’s death broke, thousands have been flocking to the castle square to lay flowers and letters and light candles.
The new King Haakon VIII, Harald’s son, delivered a moving and personal first televised address as monarch on Saturday evening.
Haakon is due to take the constitutional oath of office before Norway’s parliament on Tuesday, in a ceremony that will be broadcast live on television.
There is no longer a traditional coronation ceremony in Norway.
