Hohoe (V/R), Sept. 1, GNA – The New Horizon Foundation of the Blind (NHFB), a non-governmental organisation based in Ho, has presented educational materials to visually impaired students of Hohoe E.P. Senior High School (HEPSS) to promote inclusive education.
The items included eight laptops, five tablets, eight tablet chargers/charging heads and eight headsets.
Mr Eric K. Ofori, Director and Founder of NHFB, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the donation formed part of the organisation’s Technology Enhanced and Accessible Classrooms for Higher Impact (TEACH) Project.
He said the project focused on equipping schools with assistive technology, digital learning tools and specialised teacher training to promote inclusive digital education.
Mr Ofori said the organisation had identified visually impaired students who struggled to read from boards and textbooks.
“So we brought them together and gave them some training on how to use their laptops and tablets in an accessible way so as to enable them read their textbooks,” he said.
He said about 90 teachers in the Volta Region had been trained to assist visually impaired students with learning materials and provide adequate teaching and learning support.
Mr Ofori said, in addition to the donations, the organisation was working to provide students with tactile diagrams using 3D technology to enable them receive similar learning support as their sighted colleagues.
He said there were plans to develop the school into an inclusive institution with a resource centre because of its strategic location.
Mr Franklin Amesimeku, Headmaster of the school, expressed gratitude to the organisation for the gesture.
He said management would support the organisation’s efforts to transform the school into an inclusive learning centre capable of meeting the needs of visually impaired students.
