Khartoum, Sept 17. (dpa/GNA) – Dozens of miners died when a goldmine in the southern Sudanese province of West Kordofan collapsed, the Dar Hamar medical aid organization reported on Wednesday.
Dar Hamar said 64 deaths had so far been confirmed in the accident, which took place on Sunday. Another 55 people were injured.
According to the emergency services in the nearby town of En Nahud, six contiguous mine shafts collapsed. It estimated that at least 60 to 70 people had been affected, but said the exact number remained unclear.
Miners who managed to escape reported, that some of their colleagues had been buried alive. Rescue efforts are being hampered by the depth of the shafts, as well as a lack of specialized personnel and technical equipment.
The region is controlled by the rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Sudan has been at war between the RSF and the army since April 2023. Since then, tens of thousands have been killed and more than 14 million displaced.
The conflict has triggered one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
