Accra, Sept. 8, GNA – Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President, has commended the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, for promoting unity within Ghana’s Muslim community and contributing to peace and social cohesion.
He said Sheikh Sharubutu’s more than six decades of service had made a positive impact on the Muslim community and the wider Ghanaian society.
Dr Bawumia made the remarks at the annual National Maulid celebration at Fadama in Accra, where thousands of Muslims gathered to commemorate the birth of Prophet Muhammad.
The celebration, organised under the auspices of the National Chief Imam, brought together religious leaders, political figures, traditional authorities and members of the Muslim community from Ghana and neighbouring countries.
The National Maulid is held to mark the birth of Prophet Muhammad and provides an occasion for prayers, sermons and reflection on his teachings. This year’s celebration also focused on prayers for peace, unity and national development.
Dr Bawumia commended Sheikh Sharubutu for institutionalising and sustaining the annual celebration, describing it as an important platform for promoting Islamic values and strengthening bonds within the Muslim Ummah.
“I wish to pay a special tribute to my father, our father, the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu. For over six decades, he has instituted and sustained this noble gathering, bringing the Ummah together to honour the greatest of mankind,” he said.
Dr Bawumia said the Chief Imam’s consistency and dedication reflected his deep love for Prophet Muhammad, commitment to Islam and devotion to serving humanity.
He said Sheikh Sharubutu’s influence extended beyond the Muslim community, with his counsel and leadership contributing to peace and social cohesion in Ghana.
“Beyond the Maulid, the National Chief Imam stands as a towering symbol of unity for the Muslim Ummah and for the entire nation of Ghana. He is an embodiment of peace, tolerance, humility and compassion,” he said.
Dr Bawumia said Sheikh Sharubutu had demonstrated exemplary leadership through his openness and ability to connect with people from different religious, ethnic and political backgrounds.
“He speaks to all, he welcomes all and he fathers all. Ghana is blessed to have him and we pray Allah continues to bless him with long life and more wisdom,” he said.
The former Vice President urged Muslims to uphold the teachings of Prophet Muhammad by embracing patience, humility and discipline in their daily lives, particularly encouraging the youth to draw inspiration from the Prophet’s character and values.
He also urged the Muslim community to continue promoting peaceful coexistence and mutual respect among people of different faiths to preserve Ghana’s reputation as a peaceful and united nation.
