Agona Nyakrom (C/R), Sept. 15, GNA – The Agona West Municipal Assembly has organised an ‘accounting to the people forum’ to create a platform for government officials in the area to give account of their stewardship to the people.
Mr Eric Gyamfi Odoom, the Municipal Chief Executive, and Mrs Ernestina Ofori Dangbey, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Agona West, briefed the gathering on how they had utilised their share of the District Assembly’s Common Fund from the central government.
The forum also gave citizens the opportunity to ask questions, offer useful suggestions and enumerate problems, such as unemployment, bad roads and lack of basic social amenities to impress on the authorities to solve them.
Mr Ekow Panyin Okyere Eduamoah, the Central Regional Minister who addressed the media after the forum at Agona Nyakrom, said the Forum, instituted by President John Mahama was to give fair chances to Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) and MPs to account for state funds given to their offices for developmental projects.
The Minister said it was also to ensure equitable distribution of infrastructural projects to every community, whether they voted for or against the Party in power in the last elections.
Mr Eduamoah praised Agona West Municipal Chief (MCE) for the area for unity and collaboration, adding that where there was unity, development thrived and brought transformation into the people’s lives.
The Regional Minister earlier, commissioned a six-classroom block at Agona Kwaman and a police station at Agona Nyakrom which was started in 2016 to provide adequate security to the people.
The Minister in an answer to a question during an open forum, directed the Agona West Municipal Assembly to take over the management of an Astro Turf at Nyakrom constructed by the previous government at the cost of GHC1.5 million but was being managed by a private individual, as early as practicable.
Mr Eric Gyamfi Odoom, the MCE said the Assembly had distributed 600 dual desks to several basic schools in the Municipality and had taken delivery of another 200 metal desks that would be distributed to other schools.
The MCE said the Assembly had dug 27 boreholes of which 19 were mechanised and the rest with hand pumps for communities without electricity.
He mentioned beneficiary communities to include Agona Nyakrom, Agona Kwaman, Agona Nkum, Agona Otsenkorang, and several others to check water crisis in the Area.
Mr Odoom said the Assembly had taken over the construction of a male and female wards at Nyakrom Health Centre, initiated by the chiefs and people as a self-help legacy project, and work was progressing steadily.
The Assembly had also completed a stalled health centre at Agona Ahamadonko and Agona Nkranful as well as a legacy police station project at Agona Nyakrom, recently commissioned by the Minister.
Mrs Ernestina Ofori Dangbey, the MP for Agona West said the cooperation between her and the MCE had facilitated the completion of many projects, particularly stalled education structures at Agona Kwaman, James Nkwanta and storm drains at Nkranful.
The MP appealed to MMDCEs in the Region to work together with their MPs because unity was the only way to aid growth in their various constituencies and districts to improve the livelihoods of the people.
Okofo Katakyi Nyakoh Eku X, the Omanhene of Agona Nyakrom Traditional Area, who chaired the forum commended the government for the forum that offered opportunity to people of all walks of lives to air their views on issues pertaining to local governance.
The Omanhene asked the Regional Minister to use his good offices to impress upon Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to provide transformer for Agona Nkum to solve the low voltage in the Area and continue a stalled toilet project at Agona Nyakrom.
