Accra, Sept. 5, GNA – The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the performance of candidates in the core subjects in the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates.
A statement issued by the Council Friday night said 315,094 candidates, representing 62.40 per cent, obtained grades A1-C6 in English Language, while 49,771 candidates (9.86 per cent) obtained D7.
It said 37,080 candidates (7.34 per cent) obtained E8, while 55,940 candidates (11.08 per cent) obtained F9.
In Core Mathematics, 306,234 candidates (60.75 per cent) obtained grades A1-C6; 54,420 (10.80 per cent) obtained D7; 54,121 (10.74 per cent) obtained E8; while 74,692 candidates (14.82 per cent) obtained F9.
For Integrated Science, 309,605 candidates (62.08 per cent) obtained grades A1-C6, 54,649 (10.96 per cent) obtained D7, 46,526 (9.33 per cent) obtained E8, while 76,136 candidates (15.27 per cent) obtained F9.
The statement said in Social Studies, 393,918 candidates (78.04 per cent) obtained grades A1-C6; 35,435 (7.02 per cent) obtained D7; 25,253 (5.00 per cent) obtained E8; while 39,416 candidates (7.81 per cent) obtained F9.
It said a four-year analysis of candidates’ performance in the core subjects showed varying trends between 2023 and 2026.
In English Language, the proportion of candidates obtaining grades A1-C6 declined progressively from 73.11 per cent in 2023 to 69.42 per cent in 2024, 69.00 per cent in 2025, and 62.30 per cent in 2026.
For Core Mathematics, the proportion increased from 62.23 per cent in 2023 to 66.86 per cent in 2024, before declining to 48.73 per cent in 2025 and rising again to 60.75 per cent in 2026.
In Integrated Science, candidates obtaining grades A1-C6 constituted 66.82 per cent in 2023, 58.77 per cent in 2024, 57.74 per cent in 2025 and 62.08 per cent in 2026.
For Social Studies, the proportion stood at 76.76 per cent in 2023, declined to 71.53 per cent in 2024 and 55.82 per cent in 2025, before rising significantly to 78.04 per cent in 2026.
The statement said a careful analysis of the results showed that candidates’ performance in Core Mathematics, Integrated Science and Social Studies varied over the four-year period, while English Language recorded a progressive decline during the same period.
