Aboso-Breman Junction (W/R), Aug. 5, GNA – Three persons have reportedly died following an explosion at Aboso-Breman Junction in the Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality of the Western Region on Tuesday, August 5.
Five other persons who sustained various injuries in the incident are receiving treatment at the Apinto Government Hospital and the Tarkwa Municipal Hospital.
Authorities are yet to officially confirm the cause of the explosion.
However, the Western Central Regional Police Commander, Commissioner of Police (COP) Desmond Owusu Boampong; the Deputy Regional Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Bismark Agyapong; and other senior police officers visited the scene to assess the situation.
Mr Frank Denkyi Adjei, a mining expert, told the police team that, based on preliminary observations, the explosives were likely stored on the surface.
“Typically, the explosives were stored on the surface, and the amount of energy released indicates that a gun may have been fired in the direction of the explosives, triggering the blast,” he said.
The police delegation later visited the two hospitals where the injured victims were receiving treatment.
The bodies of the three deceased persons have been deposited at the Tarkwa Municipal Hospital mortuary pending preservation and autopsy.
The Ghana News Agency gathered that the Western Central Regional Police Command, in collaboration with other stakeholders, has put in place the necessary safety measures to protect residents in the area affected by the explosion.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
