Cape Coast, Aug. 26, GNA – The Assin Fosu District Court on Wednesday remanded a 37-year-old self-styled spiritualist and herbalist, Enoch Antwi, known as (Nana Kakali), in police custody for allegedly stealing a Hyundai Atos taxi at Assin Manso in the Assin South District of the Central Region.
The accused known to the police as a notorious car snatcher in the area, was charged with stealing and would be re-arraigned in court on Tuesday, September 8.
The Prosecutor, Chief Inspector Gilbert Abanga Anyongo, prayed the court presided over by Mr Abdul Majid Iliasu, to remand the accused in police custody to enable the police to complete its investigations.
He said Antwi was arrested on Sunday, August 23, at a hideout at Agona Swedru by the Cybercrime Unit of the Central North Regional Police Command following intelligence-led enquiries.
The Prosecutor said the complainant, Mr Benjamin Akyerefi Baidoo, alias Nana Maaley, a driver residing at Assin Manso, met the accused on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, when he visited Assin Manso to purchase a dove for spiritual purposes and they exchanged contacts.
He said on Friday, July 17, at about 17:30 hours the complainant met the accused after work and took him to his residence, where Antwi prepared a concoction for the complainant to bathe with.
He said later that evening the Mr Baidoo asked Antwi to accompany him in his Hyundai Atos taxi to deliver some items to his sister.
Chief Inspector Anyongo said on their way, the vehicle got stuck, prompting the complainant to walk to his sister’s residence after the accused assured him, he would remain in the car.
When the complainant returned, he discovered that the taxi had disappeared and the accused was nowhere to be found.
Mr Baidoo later returned home and attempted to contact Antwi on phone, only to find out that the number was unavailable.
He reported the matter to the Assin Fosu Cybercrime Unit on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, and during the investigations, the police obtained a court order from the Assin Fosu District Court and submitted it to MTN Ghana to assist in retrieving telecommunications records.
Intelligence from those records and other inquiries led officers to Antwi’s hideout at Agona Swedru, where he was arrested on August 23.
During interrogation, Chief Inspector Anyongo said Antwi admitted stealing the taxi and told the police that he had sold it to scrap dealers for GH¢7,000 and had received GH¢2,500 as part payment.
He subsequently led investigators to Suhum, where the stolen Hyundai Atos was recovered.
