Accra, Aug. 15, GNA РRegular consumption of NIDO powdered milk could help reduce iron deficiency and anaemia among children in Ghana, Mr Kwabena Adarkwa, Category Manager for Nutrition and Powdered Milks, Nestl̩ Ghana, has said.
He said iron deficiency remained a public health concern that could affect children’s energy levels, concentration, learning ability and long-term development.
Mr Adarkwa made the observation at the launch of NIDO Obaatanpa in Accra.
He said a sachet of NIDO powdered milk provided about 50 per cent of the daily iron requirement for children aged four to 12 years.
Mr Adarkwa encouraged parents to complement NIDO powdered milk with iron-rich foods, including animal protein and beans, as well as fruits rich in vitamin C, to meet their children’s daily nutritional needs.
He called for greater public awareness and action to address iron deficiency among children and support the development of healthy and productive human capital.
The launch also introduced a promotion to reward Ghanaian families who had continued to use NIDO as a family milk brand.
The promotion offers prizes including scholarships for children and a holiday trip to Sao Tome.
Ms Antoinette Appeakorang, Category Development Manager at Nestlé Ghana, said findings
from the 2022 Ghana Demographic and Health Survey showed that nearly half of children under five years had iron deficiency.
She said iron deficiency could affect children’s physical growth, concentration, learning ability and participation in school.
Ms Appeakorang said prolonged nutritional deficiencies could undermine educational outcomes and future economic productivity.
She said iron deficiency could be prevented through balanced diets containing adequate sources of iron.
Ms Appeakorang reaffirmed Nestlé Ghana’s commitment to improving nutrition in the country.
She urged parents and the public to look out for the small sachet bearing the pink promotional inscription, with a unique code, and follow the instructions.
