Beirut, Aug 5 (dpa/GNA) – One person has been killed and 12 others injured, in an Israeli airstrike on the southern Lebanese town of Tebnine in the Bint Jbeil area, Lebanon’s Ministry of Public Health reported on Wednesday.
The Lebanese state-run National News Agency (NNA) reported that the strike, hit the roof of a mosque located in the town’s cemetery.
The Israeli military said earlier that it had launched targeted strikes in southern Lebanon, in response to what it described as a clear violation of the ceasefire agreement by the Hezbollah militia.
The army did not provide further details on the targets struck. Hezbollah did not immediately comment on the Israeli claims.
The strike came as a seventh round of talks between Israeli and Lebanese government officials was under way in Rome, with discussions focused on strengthening a ceasefire arrangement that ended the latest escalation between Israel and Hezbollah.
The Iran-backed Shiite group is not directly participating in the negotiations. Israel and Hezbollah have repeatedly accused each other of violating the ceasefire. Israel continues to maintain troops at several positions in southern Lebanon and has carried out attacks despite the truce.
Under the ceasefire framework, Israel is expected to withdraw its forces from southern Lebanon, while Hezbollah is to be disarmed and Lebanese army forces deployed in the area. The measures have yet to be fully implemented.
