Prampram, Aug. 07, GNA – The Ningo-Prampram District Assembly (NiPDA) has distributed assistive devices, livelihood equipment and cash grants to 130 persons with disabilities (PWDs) to promote their economic empowerment and social inclusion.
The support, provided through the District Assembly Common Fund (DACF) Disability Fund, forms part of the Assembly’s implementation of the Persons with Disability Act, 2006 (Act 715), which requires Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to allocate at least five per cent of the DACF to programmes for persons with disabilities.
Items distributed included sewing machines, deep freezers, refrigerators, poly tanks, wheelbarrows, tiling machines, laptops, plastic chairs and tables, bags of rice, cooking oil and cash grants to support the establishment of small businesses.
Mr Raphael Uriel Nartey, the Ningo-Prampram District Chief Executive, said the beneficiaries were selected through a transparent process across the district’s 22 electoral areas.
He said the distribution was the second tranche for the 2026 financial year, following an earlier exercise in January that benefited 50 persons with disabilities.
Mr Nartey assured beneficiaries that additional disbursements would be made when further releases became available.
He urged beneficiaries to use the items for their intended purposes to improve their livelihoods and cautioned against selling or diverting them.
According to him, such practices would undermine the objectives of the Disability Fund.
Mr Richmond Tetteh, the Ningo-Prampram District Director of the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development, explained that applications were subjected to vetting, needs assessment, appraisal, procurement and disbursement processes before beneficiaries were selected.
He also sensitised beneficiaries on the centralised management information system for persons with disabilities and warned against multiple registrations across districts, noting that the system was capable of detecting duplicate beneficiaries.
Mr Tetteh said the department would undertake post-distribution monitoring and home visits to ensure that the items were properly utilised.
He added that beneficiaries who sold or misused the items would be disqualified from future support.
Mr Clement Kwabena Ampofo, speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, expressed appreciation to the Government and the Assembly for the support and pledged that recipients would use the items judiciously to improve their livelihoods.
