Tel Aviv, Aug 25 (RIA Novosti/GNA) – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday condemned a member of Knesset, Zvi Sukkot, who drove into a Palestinian village under military escort on Tuesday morning and destroyed a local monument.
Earlier in the day, Sukkot destroyed a monument in the Palestinian village of Adama, near Nablus, in front of Israeli soldiers guarding the member. Sukkot claimed the monument was erected in memory of a terrorist who murdered Jews.
“Taking the law into one’s own hands, particularly by public figures, is unacceptable and hinders the IDF from focusing on its missions of combating terror and incitement,” Netanyahu said in a statement on X.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has primary security authority in Judea and Samaria (the Israeli designation for the West Bank) and is obligated to implement the decisions of the political leadership, the statement added.
Video of the incident was published by broadcaster Kan and other Israeli media outlets. The over two-minute recording shows Sukkot striking the monument with a sledgehammer.
The SUV from which the parliament member emerged was guarded by Israeli soldiers. Nearly all members of the Israeli political system, from left to right, condemned this behavior.
