Kwesimintsim (W/R), Aug. 1, GNA – Mr Ian Kwame Tugbenu, Deputy Western Regional Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has urged members of the Police Ladies Association (POLAS) to promote online safety awareness among their families and the wider public.
He said although the digital space offered enormous opportunities for communication, education and business, some unscrupulous individuals were exploiting it to perpetrate crimes, including romance scams, human trafficking, fraud and other forms of online abuse.
Mr Tugbenu made the call during an engagement with members of POLAS on the theme: “Upholding the Constitution in the Digital Age: Welfare of Women in Law Enforcement.”
He explained that the sensitisation programme was aimed at deepening awareness of misinformation and disinformation while encouraging responsible digital behaviour among participants.
Mr Tugbenu noted that false information, online abuse and digital fraud had serious consequences for individuals and the nation, stressing the need for citizens to exercise caution in their online activities.
He said the NCCE would continue to bridge the gap between the law and everyday practice to ensure that constitutional values remained relevant, understood and upheld in the evolving digital environment.
Madam Pearl Ameko, Crime Officer at the Takoradi Central Police Command, commended the Commission for the initiative, describing it as timely and important in enhancing awareness of emerging issues in the digital space.
She said the programme had provided participants with valuable knowledge needed to combat online crimes and protect vulnerable groups from digital threats.
Madam Ameko noted that the Police Ladies Association remained committed to promoting the welfare, health, emotional and mental well-being of its members, who played important roles both at work and in their homes.
She said the Association regularly organised educational programmes on issues affecting women, adding that members had recently participated in a health talk on fibroids.
