Accra, Aug. 25, GNA – Mr Albert Dwumfour, the President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), says media organisations must have clear editorial policies on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to ensure transparency and uphold journalistic standards.
He said technology was reshaping how information was gathered, produced, distributed, and consumed.
Mr Dwumfour made the call at the GJA’s 77th Anniversary Symposium and lecture in Accra to promote professionalism, strengthen ethical journalism and address emerging challenges facing the media industry.
It was on the theme: “Building on Our Legacy, Advancing Ethical Journalism and Shaping the Future of Digital Media”.
He said despite the enormous opportunities that AI provided, such as its assistance with research, translation, data analysis and monitoring, it came with serious challenges that could affect the digital position and credibility of journalism.
Mr Dwumfour noted that to address that, GJA would continue to promote capacity building in digital journalism, verification, fact-checking, data journalism, and the responsible use of AI.
“… We will encourage media organisations to develop clear editorial policies on AI, including transparency, verification, human oversight, protection of confidential sources, and respect for copyright and intellectual property,” he added.
The GJA President emphasised that whilst journalists must understand emerging technologies, the human element remained irreplaceable.
