Ho, Aug. 21, GNA – The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) is set to construct a new power substation at Adaklu in the Adaklu District of the Volta Region to improve electricity supply reliability in the Ho Municipality.
Mr James Gunu, Volta Regional Minister, announced this at a meeting of the Volta Regional Coordinating Council, saying the facility would decouple Ho Municipality from the Asiekpe grid.
He explained that the move would provide the regional capital with an independent power source, ensuring a more reliable and uninterrupted electricity supply for residents and businesses.
Mr Gunu said rapid urbanisation and the increasing number of industries in the region had placed significant pressure on the existing power infrastructure.
According to him, the growing demand for electricity had occasionally resulted in power rationing, negatively affecting commercial and industrial activities.
The Minister said the proposed substation would support the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition’s efforts to permanently address the region’s power challenges and create a resilient environment for economic growth.
He also announced plans to expand electricity coverage across the region, indicating that about 306 communities would soon be connected to the national grid under a special electrification initiative.
Touching on compensation for victims of the Akosombo dam spillage, Mr Gunu announced that President John Dramani Mahama had directed the Minister of Finance to release funds for compensation.
He assured affected communities that the disbursement process was on course to begin before the end of the year.
On road infrastructure, Mr Gunu said the region was witnessing extensive road construction projects, which, upon completion, would ease transportation challenges and stimulate economic activities.
The Minister further revealed that plans were far advanced for the establishment of a new campus of the University of Health and Allied Sciences to accommodate the School of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences.
He said land had already been secured for the project.
Mr Gunu also indicated that work on the Keta Sea Defence Project was progressing steadily and had reached about 40 per cent of completion.
He expressed optimism that by 2028, the National Democratic Congress Government would fulfil its development commitments to the people of Ghana.
The Minister urged Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to collaborate effectively to ensure the successful implementation of the Government’s programmes and initiatives aimed at improving the livelihoods of citizens.
He tasked the Assemblies to closely monitor ongoing development projects, including the 24-Hour Economy market projects being undertaken within their respective jurisdictions.
Mr Gunu emphasised the need for all projects to conform to approved technical specifications and quality standards.
Describing the Volta region as peaceful, stable, and conducive for investment, he encouraged both local and foreign investors to take advantage of the region’s economic opportunities.
