Gushegu (N/R), Aug 17, GNA – Firefighters from the Yendi Fire Station of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) have contained a fire outbreak at the Gushegu Nursing and Midwifery Training College in the Northern Region.
The team prevented the blaze from spreading to other parts of the institution.
The fire, which occurred in the early hours of Monday, August 17, affected the College’s Information and Communication Technology (ICT) laboratory and an adjoining classroom.
Assistant Divisional Officer Grade Two (ADO II) Mr Baba Hudu, Northern Regional Public Relations Officer of the GNFS, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the fire crew was dispatched from Yendi at 0728 hours following a distress call.
He said the firefighters arrived at the scene at about 0812 hours and immediately commenced firefighting operations after discovering that the fire had engulfed the ICT laboratory and the adjoining classroom.
Mr Hudu said the team managed to contain the fire at about 0852 hours restricting it to the affected laboratory.
He said the fire was finally extinguished at 0913 hours.
He said: “The prompt response by the firefighters prevented the fire from spreading to other parts of the institution and saved the school’s infrastructure from complete destruction.”
Mr Hudu said the cause of the fire had not yet been established, adding that investigations would commence to determine the circumstances surrounding the outbreak and establish its root cause.
He said the Service would continue to work with institutions and communities to promote fire prevention and safety measures.
He advised schools and other institutions to regularly inspect their electrical systems and ensure that fire safety equipment was available and functional to help prevent fire outbreaks and minimise damage when they occurred.
He urged members of the public to report fire incidents promptly to enable firefighters to respond quickly and prevent the spread of fires.
