Berry picker rescued after four days in Lithuanian forest

Riga, Aug 13. (dpa/GNA) – A missing elderly woman has been found alive in the forest in Lithuania, after a search by hundreds of people lasting several days.

The 74-year-old went berry picking near the village of Papilvis on Sunday and did not return, Lithuania’s LRT broadcaster reported on Thursday.

For several days, relatives, emergency services and volunteers combed the rugged wooded area, before army units also joined the search and found the woman.

According to a Red Cross spokesman, she was located more than two kilometres from where she had disappeared. The woman was conscious during an examination, recognized her relatives and is now in their care.

“The berries most likely saved her life,” the spokesman said. Picking berries and mushrooms is a popular pastime in Lithuania in late summer and autumn.

However, people often get lost in the extensive forests of the EU Baltic state.
