Ahorkpoe (V/R), Aug. 20, GNA – The people of Ahorkpoe Electoral Area in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region have cut the sod for the construction of a new information centre to boost communication in the area.
The ceremony also marked the beginning of a project that community leaders believe would enhance information dissemination and generate an additional source of revenue for the electoral area.
Mr Saviour Agbeko Awoye, Assembly Member for the Ahorkpoe Electoral Area, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that all equipment required for the construction had been procured by Torgbui Apiwu II at a cost of more than GH¢10,000, describing the gesture as a significant contribution to the community’s development.
“Our community has been planning to put up the facility for the past two years but had been unable to do so due to financial constraints. Land acquisition was also identified as a major challenge that delayed this important project that would change the fortunes of everybody here,” he said.
Mr Awoye expressed appreciation to the Senanu and Agbovi families for donating the land for the project, describing the gesture as an important contribution to the development of the community and the wider electoral area.
He said the project, when completed, would serve as a source of income for the electoral area while also giving residents access to services they previously had to seek from information centres in other communities.
“Let me also use this opportunity to thank Torgbui Apiwu II and his Council of Elders for the initiative. We are also appealing to other traditional leaders, opinion leaders, individuals and organisations to support this project. I am confident that the project will be completed and ready for commissioning by the end of this year,” he said.
Mr Daniel Akoetey, Unit Committee Chairman, told the GNA that other Unit Committee members and residents had been engaged to support the workers to ensure that construction progressed rapidly, while all necessary labour for the project would be undertaken through communal effort.
He called on residents to contribute their time, effort and energy towards the successful completion of the facility to benefit all communities in the surrounding areas.
Mr Mawuworge Prosper Kadu, Youth Chairman, also urged the youth to actively participate in the project and contribute to its success for the advancement of the community.
Torgbui Apiwu II, for his part, charged residents to take ownership of the project and ensure that the equipment and materials procured for the construction were properly secured throughout the construction period.
He said that would help ensure that the facility continued to meet the developmental needs of the community it was intended to serve.
The information centre is expected to become an important community facility upon completion, strengthening local communication while creating opportunities for revenue generation and development in the Ahorkpoe Electoral Area.
