Walewale (NE/R), July 24, GNA – The Yara Ghana has launched two new fertiliser products namely Yara Winner Plus and Yara Legume, aimed at improving crop yields and supporting farmers across the country.
The Yara Winner Plus is formulated for fruits, vegetables and rice providing a balanced mix of nitrogen, macro and micronutrients to improve crop growth while protecting soil health.
Yara Legume is specially designed for leguminous crops such as soybean and cowpea.
Madam Theresa Randolph, the Country Director, Yara Ghana, speaking during at Walewale in the North East Region, the launch of the new fertilizers, said they were developed after several years of research with scientific partners.
The research results showed that they significantly improved nodulation, pod formation, crop growth, yields, and farmers’ incomes.
She said the Yara’s approach was based on crop-specific nutrition ensuring each crop received the right nutrients at the right time.
She said unlike generic fertilisers, Yara’s blends were designed to maintain soil health, reduce soil acidification and promote sustainable farming through slow-release nitrate nitrogen.
Madam Randolph thanked farmers for their contribution to the economy and expressed the company’s commitment to providing innovative fertiliser solutions that increased productivity, improved livelihoods and strengthened national food security.
Mr Abdul Rahaman Mahama, the Commercial Manager, Northern Sector, Yara Ghana, explained the recommended application and benefits of Yara Winner Plus and said it had an NPK formula of 5-9-20 enriched with Sulphur and magnesium oxide.
He said the recommended application rate was two bags (100 kg) per acre for both vegetables and rice, applied as a basal fertilizer about two weeks after transplanting.
He said for vegetables, the high potassium content promoted better flowering, improved fruit quality and firmness and increased resistance to pests and diseases.
He said: “For rice, it enhances tillering, panicle initiation, grain formation and ultimately leads to higher yields.”
Mr Mahama emphasized that Yara was a crop nutrition company that developed fertilizers tailored to the specific nutritional needs of different crops rather than using “A one-size-fits-all approach.”
He said cereals, vegetables, fruits, and legumes each required different nutrient formulations, which was why Yara had introduced specialized fertilizers for vegetables and legumes to help farmers achieve better productivity and crop quality.
Mr Francis Iddi, a farmer from Walewale, shared his experience using Yara Activa fertiliser and explained that after comparing it with other fertilizers on different sections of his farm, he achieved higher yields where Yara Activa was applied, hence his continued use of the product.
Madam Spenika Darko, a Yara Ghana distributor in the region, praised the company’s crop nutrition products for their high quality and effectiveness.
She described the Yara Winner Plus as a major step forward especially for rice, fruits, and vegetables due to its 20% potassium content.
