Wontumi’s plea negotiations with state ongoing – Court told

Accra, July 6, GNA – Bernard Antwi Boasiako’s plea negotiations in the Exim Bank fraud case is ongoing, the State told an Accra High Court on Monday.

Mr Joshua Sackey, a Principal State Attorney, said: “We are still at the negotiating table, and we are praying for adjournment to bring a close to this case.”

Mr Andy Appiah-Kubi defence counsel for Boasiako, a businessman and Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) confirmed the state’s assertion.

The court, therefore, adjourned the matter to July 27, 2026.

Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), is being held over GHC30 million Exim Bank loan he contracted for a farming project.

Boasiako is in the dock with one Thomas Antwi Boasiako, currently at large and Wontumi Farms.

Wuntumi and his two associates are facing charges including money laundering, wilfully causing financial loss to the state, uttering of forged documents, and defrauding by false pretences.

He has denied the charges and is on bail.

Prosecution details indicated that in January 2018, Boasiako approached the Exim Bank for a loan facility of GHC19 million to support a farming project on a 100 acre land.

The bank subsequently approved GHC18.7 million for the acquisition of agricultural machinery.

By March 2018, an amount of GHC 14.3 million had been disbursed to Wontumi Farms.

However, investigations later revealed that the proposed farming project was never undertaken.

The accused is alleged to have presented documents described as receipts to support the purchase of agricultural machinery, valued at GHC4million, which prosecution claimed was not genuine.

The loan facility is alleged to have accrued to the tune of GHC30 million.
