US Ebola patient discharged from Frankfurt hospital

Frankfurt, July 28 (dpa/GNA) – A patient infected with Ebola was discharged in good health from Frankfurt University Hospital in Germany on Tuesday.

The US national, who was working as a logistics specialist for an aid organization, contracted the virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

He displayed the typical symptoms of people infected with the Bundibugyo virus, the strain of Ebola currently rampant in the Congo, the hospital said when he was admitted around two weeks ago. His condition stabilized in the special isolation ward for highly pathogenic infectious agents, and thanks to supportive treatment, his symptoms soon improved.

The man has made a full recovery and is now symptom-free, so he has been discharged, the hospital said. Patients with haemorrhagic fever have been successfully treated at Frankfurt University Hospital in the past.

Ebola is a contagious and life-threatening disease. The virus can be transmitted through direct physical contact and contact with bodily fluids.

In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the latest Ebola outbreak is proving particularly difficult to contain, with neither a vaccine nor a specific treatment available for the Bundibugyo strain.
