Upper West Regional Police Command intercepts illegal ammunition, arrests three

Accra, July 3, GNA – The Upper West Regional Police Command on June 29, 2026, intercepted a commercial vehicle transporting a large quantity of ammunition through an unapproved route outside Wa, the regional capital. 

Three persons; Alhassan Issahaku, Iddrisu Mashood, and Alhaji Issahaku, were arrested in connection with the incident. 

A statement signed by Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Peter Kamasa, Deputy Upper West Regional Commander, and copied to the Ghana News Agency on Friday, said a search of the vehicle led to the retrieval of 200 boxes of AA cartridges, containing 50,000 rounds of ammunition, concealed beneath other goods. 

ACP Kamasa said the three suspects were linked to the transportation of the ammunition and were subsequently arrested to assist with police investigations. 

He said the suspects remained in custody while efforts were underway to establish the source of the ammunition and apprehend any other persons who might be involved. 

The Regional Police Command commended the professionalism and integrity of the officers who participated in the operation. 

The Command also assured residents of the region of its commitment to protecting lives and property, preventing crime, and maintaining a peaceful and secure environment for all law-abiding citizens. 

ACP Kamasa encouraged the public to continue supporting the Police by providing timely and credible information to help combat crime and safeguard communities.
