By Edward Williams, GNA

Hohoe (V/R), July 1, GNA – Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Richard Dassah, Volta North Regional Commander, Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), has cautioned drivers to stay away from sex if they were driving long distances.

The ‘abstinence’ was to enable them have enough rest for the journey to avoid road crashes.

ASP Dassah during a Road Safety Sensitisation in Hohoe, said “once the body is sick or tired, you cannot have control over it”.

He said drivers and riders must stay away from alcohol and drugs since they influence them while driving leading to loss of lives and properties.

ASP Dassah said uncalculated overtaking on hilss and speeding as well as use of communication gadgets while driving or riding resulted in accidents.

He urged drivers of spoilt vehicles to mount advance warning signs at least 45 metres from the broken-down vehicle to inform other road users.

ASP Dassah called on them to avoid using unsafe vehicles, respect traffic light indications, control speed limit and avoid using unauthorised sirens, headlights and horns.

He called on driver and rider unions to organise frequent sensitisation programmes for their members as well as institute punitive measures for habitual offenders.

Mr Prosper Kumi, Hohoe Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) said safety of everyone was a collective responsibility and accident prevention hinged on all playing their respective roles.

He said road safety regulation directives which others found offensive were meant to protect citizens.

Mr Kumi called on the various unions in the transport sector within the Municipality to ensure safety and adhere to rules and regulations.

DOIII Bismark Hosu-Porbley, Hohoe Municipal Fire Service Commander, said fire personnel were the first respondents to accidents.

He urged drivers to fill their tanks before loading passengers and not carrying passengers to the filling station for fuel after leaving the scale.

DOIII Hosu-Porbley urged drivers and riders not to handle flammable liquids such as fuel.

He urged them to care for their engines and exhaust as well as be visible by always keeping headlights on and avoid being at the blind side of vehicles.

Mr Eugene Komla Tawiah, Hohoe District Manager, Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), noted that being concentrated on being the steering wheel prevented road crashes.

He said drivers must avoid loud music to keep their ears in the car while calling on motor riders to always use the appropriate helmets.

Mr. Tawiah urged riders to wear gloves, avoid calls while riding, and wear the appropriate sandals to avoid putting themselves and passengers in danger.
