State Experimental Basic One School gets STEM laboratory

Kumasi, July 21, GNA – The State Experimental Basic One School in Kumasi has inaugurated a STEM laboratory equipped with learning materials to enhance the teaching and learning of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) among pupils. 

The equipment was supplied by the government through the Ghana Education Service (GES) as part of efforts to promote STEM education in schools. 

Mr. David Oppong, Kumasi Metropolitan Director of Education, speaking at a ceremony to commission the facility, underscored the importance of science, engineering, technology and mathematics in addressing societal challenges. 

He said children needed to embrace the practical aspects of STEM education to develop their curiosity and deepen their understanding of the subjects. 

Mr. Oppong said about three months ago, the government supplied STEM materials to selected schools, adding that 17 schools in the Kumasi Metropolis benefited from the initiative to advance STEM education. 

He advised parents to support their children, encourage them to be curious, ask questions at home and avoid discouraging them from expressing themselves. 

The Metro Education Director pledged that the Education Directorate would continue to provide professional and technical support to schools to ensure that STEM education achieved its intended objectives. 

“The world is changing at a faster pace, and it is necessary to support children in this direction to discover their potentials,” he said. 

Madam Joana Anokyewaa, Headmistress of the State Experimental Basic One School, said the school had over the years developed a strong interest in promoting STEM education and had participated and excelled in several competitions in the area. 

These included the Ghana Science Explorer Prize and the National Robotics Competition. 

Madam Anokyewaa said science and technology were central to national development, describing the new laboratory as a centre for discovery, creativity, innovation and problem-solving. 

She said the facility would provide learners with opportunities to move beyond theory and engage in practical experiments to deepen their understanding of science and prepare them for the future.
