Accra, July 21, GNA – The Government will construct 50,000 housing units for teachers nationwide under the “Teacher Dabre Initiative” to address accommodation challenges.
The initiative will prioritise those serving in rural and hard-to-reach communities, where housing remains a major challenge.
Mr Haruna Iddrisu, Minister of Education, announced this at the Government Accountability Series on the mid-year assessment of education in Ghana at the Presidency, Accra.
He said the project would be implemented through a decentralised approach, with the District Assemblies Common Fund leading implementation at the regional and district levels.
“We intend to construct 50,000 housing units for teachers all across the country. It is led by the District Assemblies Common Fund, so we want to decentralise it at the regional and district level,” he said.
Mr Iddrisu said the Government would mobilise additional financing to support the successful implementation of the initiative.
He said that a financial incentive would be introduced for teachers who voluntarily accepted postings to rural and hard-to-reach areas.
The Minister said improving teacher welfare was essential to enhancing the quality of education delivery across the country.
