FREETOWN, July 6 (Xinhua/GNA) – The Government of Sierra Leone on Monday, announced the reopening of the Yenga border crossing with Guinea, following sustained diplomatic engagements between the two neighboring countries.
According to a public notice issued by the Ministry of Information and Civic Education, the border crossing at Yenga village along the Makona River officially reopened on June 24, 2026, at the Koindu-Nongoa crossing point in Kissi Teng Chiefdom, Kailahun District, restoring cross-border trade and the movement of people.
The border had remained closed since April 28, 2025, resulting in humanitarian and economic hardship, including the displacement of residents from Yenga to Koindu and nearby communities. During the closure, the Sierra Leone government provided assistance to affected residents while pursuing diplomatic efforts to resolve the impasse.
The ministry said the reopening followed directives from President Julius Maada Bio and engagements between the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces and the Guinean Armed Forces, with support from political and administrative authorities of both countries.
Under the agreed arrangements, the Sierra Leone National Revenue Authority will continue collecting revenue within Sierra Leonean territory, including Yenga, while the Sierra Leone Immigration Department will maintain its presence in the area.
Both governments also agreed that Guinea will provide Sierra Leone with at least 48 hours’ notice before any future border closure.
The statement said Sierra Leone and Guinea reaffirmed their commitment to peaceful coexistence, stronger bilateral relations and continued dialogue toward a lasting resolution of the Yenga issue and other boundary matters. Discussions on the safe return of displaced Yenga residents are continuing.
