Dwomo, (W/R), July 26, GNA – The Shama District Assembly in the Western Region has acquired a nine-acre parcel of land near Atwereboanda to establish its own landfill site, ending its reliance on the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) for waste disposal services.
The move is expected to save the Assembly about GHS80,000 in monthly sanitation costs previously paid under a waste management arrangement with the STMA.
Mr Paul Otis Dentu, District Chief Executive (DCE) for Shama, announced this during a town hall meeting at Dwomo, where he presented the Assembly’s development account and ongoing projects to residents.
He said the new landfill site would not only reduce the financial burden on the Assembly but also provide direct control over waste management operations within the district.
Touching on healthcare delivery, Mr Dentu highlighted the construction of a new Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compound with nurses’ quarters at Dwomo.
He said the Assembly had also drilled mechanised boreholes at Daboase Junction, Supomu Dunkwa, Esiaman, Ohiamadwen, Aboso and other communities to improve access to potable water.
The DCE further disclosed that the Assembly had procured two pick-up vehicles to support its administrative and operational activities.
On road infrastructure, Mr Dentu said a number of feeder roads within the district had been tarred to improve transportation and accessibility.
He added that the Assembly was using equipment acquired under the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP) to undertake periodic reshaping and grading of roads to facilitate the movement of people, goods and agricultural produce.
The town hall meeting formed part of efforts by the Assembly to deepen accountability, promote transparency and obtain direct feedback from residents on their development priorities.
Nana Kobena Ntahiaka II, Chief of Aboadze, commended the Assembly for the ongoing development projects being undertaken across the district.
He, however, called for a more inclusive approach to governance and development planning.
“Politics is not only about voting for leaders. It is about the development process, and that process requires the involvement of chiefs, opinion leaders, and other stakeholders,” he said.
