Kumasi, July 27. GNA – The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has assured electricity consumers in Kumasi and other parts of the Ashanti region, of a steady and well-structured timetable for power outages, as the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) undertake a power system upgrade exercise.
The upgrade exercise, which is expected to take about three months to complete, is part of the efforts to provide sustainable uninterrupted power supply in the metropolis.
Dr Shafic Suleman, the Executive Secretary for PURC, made the call at a press conference with a section of the media at Kumasi.
He said the PURC was committed to working collaboratively with GRIDCO and ECG to improve electricity supply, ensure its reliability, stability, and efficiency.
He explained that the upgrade exercise would cause interruptions in power supply in some areas in the metropolis and pleaded with the public to bear with them.
He mentioned the laying of a 185km 330KV double circuit transmission for Kumasi – Awomaso to Kintampo, explaining that the project seeks to develop a third bulk supply point (K3BSP) in Kumasi to improve power supply.
Dr Suleman further noted that the nine per cent (9%) tariff adjustment agreed by the Commission to undertake the exercise in some parts of the country had been used judiciously.
He also mentioned that the rural electrification project was in the pipeline, to ensure that every community got connected to the national grid.
Solar systems would also be provided for the remotest communities, he said, adding that by the close of 2030, all communities would be connected to the national grid.
He assured the public that the PURC would continue to ensure that GRIDCO and ECG came out soon with an appropriate power supply timetable for affected communities.
Mr Edward Boduah, the Ashanti Regional Manager for PURC, urged the public to not hesitate to lodge their utility complains with them for redress.
He reiterated that the planned works would require temporary interruptions in power supply in some affected areas as GRIDCo and ECG carried out maintenance and upgrade activities on critical electricity infrastructure.
Mr Boduah assured consumers that the outages would be implemented according to a clearly defined timetable to enable households, businesses, industries and other institutions to plan their activities accordingly.
