Somanya (E/R), July 27, GNA – Nene Anyernorgu Teye Agor IX, Divisional Chief of Okper in Somanya, has called on parents and guardians to prioritise the education of their children and wards, describing education as a critical tool for national development and transformation.
He said parents had a major responsibility to ensure their children remained in school and received the support needed to reach their full potential.
Nene Anyernorgu Teye Agor IX made the call when he donated educational materials to eight basic schools in the Yilo Krobo Municipality under the Okper Divisional Education Support Programme.
The donation comprised 3,000 exercise books, 1,500 pens, 750 pencils, 90 mathematical sets and other learning materials to support teaching and learning in the beneficiary schools.
The programme benefited schools in farming communities within the Yilo Krobo enclave, including Brukum, Klo Akwapim, Sikabeng and Pleyo, as well as selected schools in Somanya, including Apostolic MA Basic School, Adjikpo Dokuyo MA Basic School and Ogome Anglican School, among others.
The materials were distributed directly to pupils to provide them with essential learning resources and ease the challenges associated with accessing basic educational materials.
Nene Agor IX said the initiative formed part of his commitment to supporting education and creating opportunities for children to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to contribute meaningfully to society.
He urged parents not to leave the education of their children solely to teachers and the government, but to play active roles by providing learning materials, monitoring academic progress and encouraging them to take their studies seriously.
The chief also appealed to individuals, organisations, traditional leaders and other stakeholders to support educational initiatives, stressing that investment in education was an investment in the country’s future.
“A well-educated population is essential to Ghana’s development and transformation, as education equips young people with the knowledge, skills and values required to become productive citizens and contribute to the growth of their communities and the nation,” he said.
Nene Agor IX expressed appreciation to friends who provided financial support for the initiative, as well as elders, family members, headteachers, teachers, parents and community members whose contributions helped make the programme successful.
He said the education support programme had become an annual tradition and expressed the hope that it would continue to expand to benefit more schools and pupils.
He appealed for continued support from individuals, friends and organisations that shared his vision of promoting quality education, saying that through collective effort, more children could be given the opportunity to succeed in school and contribute to national development.
“By the grace of God, we will be back at the same time next year,” he said.
