Tamale, July 07, GNA – The Northern Region Muslims Council has called on the government to treat the issue of perennial flooding as a matter of urgency and come out with workable measures and policies to halt it.
The Council also urged engineers and urban planners to put their expertise to work by designing and constructing proper drainage systems that could effectively direct and contain downpours.
This was contained in a statement issued by the Northern Region Muslims Council, signed by Sheikh Issah Alhassan Abubakarii, its Chairman, and copied to the Ghana News Agency in Tamale on Tuesday.
The statement followed the Monday, June 29, 2026, floods recorded in Accra and other parts of the country, which resulted in loss of lives and destruction of property.
The statement said, “while we commend the government for the swift manner in which it responded to the flood victims,” there was a need to find a lasting solution to the issues of flooding in the country.
It urged Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to strictly enforce their by-laws and put a stop to the practice of permitting people to put up buildings in waterways and flood-prone areas.
It also admonished the citizenry to desist from the habit of dumping refuse into drains saying, “Everyone must keep drains clean and free of debris to allow water to flow freely.”
The statement appealed to all citizens not to politicize the disaster, adding “Rather, we should all put our shoulders to the wheel to address this national problem permanently.”
It appealed to benevolent individuals, philanthropists and corporate bodies to come to the aid of the flood victims to ameliorate their plight, saying “The government alone cannot adequately and sufficiently replace all the lost properties and livelihoods.”
It extended condolences to the bereaved families, who lost loved ones during the flood disaster. “We pray to Almighty Allah to grant His mercy and forgiveness to the departed souls, and to admit them into Jannatul Firdaus.”
It entreated all Imams and Mosques across the region to intensify prayers for Allah’s protection against calamities such as the flood disaster.
