Prampram, July 11, GNA – The Ningo-Prampram District Assembly (NiPDA) has joined the nationwide National Sanitation Day exercise to clean communities affected by the recent floods and reduce the risk of disease outbreaks.
The exercise, which began at 0700 hours on Friday, brought together officials of NiPDA, personnel from the Ghana Police Service, Ghana National Fire Service, the Ghana Navy, Zoomlion Ghana Limited, and members of the various communities.
Mr Raphael Uriel Nartey, the Ningo-Prampram District Chief Executive (DCE), said the exercise followed President John Dramani Mahama’s directive for a nationwide sanitation campaign after the recent floods.
Mr Nartey said the assembly, in collaboration with the security services and Zoomlion, provided logistics, including wheelbarrows, cutlasses, rakes and other tools to support the exercise.
He noted that participation was higher than during the regular monthly clean-up exercises because residents appreciated the urgency of addressing the aftermath of the floods.
He said communities including Prampram Landing Beach, Afienya, Old Ningo, Awiam and Omankope were among the areas affected, with floodwaters leaving large quantities of debris.
The DCE urged residents to maintain clean surroundings and refrain from dumping refuse into drains, gutters and water bodies to prevent flooding and outbreaks of communicable diseases.
“The recent floods should serve as a lesson to all of us. Keeping our environment clean is a shared responsibility,” he said.
Madam Evelyn Nani, the District Environmental Health Officer, said the clean-up targeted waste that had accumulated at the Prampram Landing Beach and choked drains leading to the shoreline.
Madam Nani commended residents for their active participation, describing the turnout as encouraging compared to previous sanitation exercises.
“In the past, it was sometimes difficult to get community members involved in these exercises. Going forward, we intend to involve the security services in our monthly clean-up activities to sustain public participation,” she said.
She stated that the assembly would intensify the enforcement of its sanitation by-laws, adding that it has established a sanitation task force to monitor environmental cleanliness across the district.
She stated that although the district had not recorded any disease outbreaks following the floods, the assembly had taken proactive measures by evacuating waste from unauthorised dumping sites.
Madam Nani also disclosed that inspections revealed the erection of some structures on waterways, which contributed to flooding during the heavy rains.
She said officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) had identified and marked the affected structures for removal to restore the natural flow of water.
