Tema, July 15, GNA — Madam Doris Lawoe, Ledzokuku Municipal Environmental Health Officer, has called on residents to take greater responsibility for sanitation in their communities, stressing that maintaining a clean environment is a shared duty that requires everyone’s participation.
Madam Lawoe made the appeal during a community clean-up exercise, where residents, security agencies, and other stakeholders joined the assembly to clear waste from streets and drains as part of efforts to improve environmental sanitation and reduce the risk of flooding.
She emphasised that environmental cleanliness could not be achieved by the assembly alone, adding that every resident had a role to play in protecting the environment by maintaining clean homes, streets, and public spaces.
Madam Lawoe also used the opportunity to educate residents on proper waste management practices and urged households to separate their waste and ensure that rubbish was disposed of only in designated bins instead of drains and gutters.
She warned that indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drains contributes significantly to flooding during the rainy season as the waste blocks the free flow of water through drainage channels and therefore encouraged residents to adopt responsible waste disposal habits.
The municipal environmental health officer said that simple actions such as separating waste, using approved bins, and participating in community cleanup exercises could help create cleaner neighbourhoods and improve public health, reiterating that sustaining a clean environment required continuous cooperation between the assembly and residents.
Touching on the clean-up exercise, she disclosed that unlike some areas where there were reports of resistance, no such incidents were recorded in Ledzokuku and attributed the peaceful and successful exercise to the efforts of assembly members who mobilised residents in their respective electoral areas.
According to her, the exercise recorded an impressive level of public participation, demonstrating that many residents understood the importance of keeping their surroundings clean and commending community members for responding positively to the initiative, expressing appreciation to security agencies for supporting the exercise and the MCE for his commitment to improving sanitation across the municipality.
