Accra, Sept. 03, GNA— Mr Mahama Ayariga, the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, has announced plans to transform the slum settlement along the Korle Lagoon in Accra into high-rise container housing.

According to him, the will forms part of the government’s renewed efforts to improve sanitation and public health conditions in the capital.

“Redevelopment will commence after a military-led evacuation and clearing of the dumpsite. All waste cleared from the site will be transported to the Adepa Waste Management Centre at Nsawam,” he said on Thursday during a working visit of the area.

The Minister added that the project will also include the dredging of the Korle Lagoon to address long-standing environmental and sanitation challenges.

The visit formed part of earlier inspections to waste fill sites in the Greater Accra and Eastern Regions.

He expressed confidence that the exercise will receive broad public support.

“Those of us who want to clear it in Accra here, we are far more than those who want to resist clearing the mess,” he told journalists.

Mr Ayariga, also the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, acknowledged that there may be some resistance from affected residents but maintained that the greater public interest in a clean and healthy Accra must prevail.
