Mali Reaffirms Support for Morocco’s Territorial Integrity, Backs Autonomy Plan for Sahara

Bamako, July 30, GNA – The Republic of Mali has reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over all its territory, including the Sahara region, while endorsing Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as the only credible and realistic solution to the regional dispute.

The position was contained in a Joint Communiqué issued at the end of the Fourth High-Level Joint Commission on Morocco-Mali Cooperation held in Bamako and co-chaired by Mr Nasser Bourita, Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, and Mr Abdoulaye Diop, Mali’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

The communiqué reiterated Mali’s backing for the efforts of the United Nations Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy in seeking a resolution to the dispute.

It also reaffirmed support for the Autonomy Plan proposed by the Kingdom of Morocco, describing it as “the only credible and realistic solution” to the issue, in line with United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 adopted on October 31, 2025.

The statement further highlighted Mali’s position in favour of Morocco’s sovereignty over its entire territory, including the Sahara region.

The renewed stance follows the Malian Government’s declaration of April 10, 2026, announcing the country’s official withdrawal of recognition of “sadr”.

The Fourth Session of the Joint Cooperation Commission between the Kingdom of Morocco and the Republic of Mali was held in Bamako from July 21 to July 24, 2026, and reviewed bilateral cooperation and regional issues of mutual interest.
